MAKING MEMORIES: Parks and reserves are amazing places, but stepping on broken glass can create lasting memories for all the wrong reasons.THERE are many different things to see and do in the parks and reserves in the Katherine region.

Depending on the time of year, you could swim with friends, watch the birds, paddle a canoe, explore underground, fish on the blue water, take the boat out, camp under the stars, eat at a five-star restaurant or simply hike the tracks and trails.

There are a few simple things we need to remember, so that we all have a great weekend.

Glass containers are not permitted in or near swimming areas in national parks and reserves.

Waterholes like Bitter Springs and the thermal pools in Elsey National Park are wonderful places to spend the day building memories with family and friends, but broken glass will definitely put a dampener on your visit.

The Royal Life Saving Society explains that alcohol contributes to at least 20 per cent of all adult drowning deaths every year, and that the figure rises to 41 per cent for people aged between 15 and 29.

Stay safe around the water this dry season – do not drink and swim.

Visitors to the Mataranka thermal pools should also remember that alcohol cannot be consumed within two kilometres of a licensed establishment.
