Executive officer with the Tamworth Livestock Selling Agents’ Association, Michelle Mawhinney, said it was a big turnout for what was usually the biggest sale of the year.

Ms Mawhinney said the buyers were a little quiet this year but she did notice a few first-time vendors at the challenge.

The Haling family from Woolbrook completed a special hat-trick, winning the weaner challenge for the third consecutive year.

Ms Mawhinney said there was still strength in the cattle market, despite the dry weather, noting Tony Haling bagged the best price for his lightest weaners sold at the challenge.

While there was a huge yarding of weaners, Ms Mawhinney said the number of buyers was comparable with previous years.
