FRUSTRATED Department of Infrastructure staff are at their wit’s end following the senseless theft of more than 30 plants installed as part of a beautification project in Katherine.

Local contractorCompass Cleaning and Ground Maintenancehadspent the past six weeks planting and nurturing desert roses in the vicinity of the iconic stockman statue on the corner of Katherine Terrace and Chambers Drive.

Regional Director for the Katherine Region Phil Harris said it was hard to fathom the motive of the offenders.

“Over the past week, Glen Hewitt and his team have spent a lot of time and energy planting around 80 desert rose plants,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing for all involved to find the plants ripped out a short period after they have gone in.

“So far, we’ve lost about 30 plants.”

Anyone with information about the theft, or who may have witnessed it,is urged to contact Katherine police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
