The croquet battle comes to Maitland

Maitland Croquet Club will hold its Golf Croquet Sweetpea doubles tournament this weekend at Maitland Park.

Thirty pairs from Forster, Taree, Hawks Nest, Newcastle, Sydney, Lake Macquarie and from across theLower Hunter will battle it out on the lawns from Friday until Sunday from 8.30am.

Men’s state champion, multi-championship winnerand Hunter Sports Hall of FamerJohn Levick will take the field for Newcastle Club.

Former World Women’s GolfCroquetChampion Alix Verge will make her long-anticipated return aftera sustained sabbatical from the sport.

The event is sponsored by the Bradford Hotel.

The purpose of croquetis to hit one-kilogramballs through stainless steel hoops, with a clearance of about 2 millimetresfrom all sorts of distances and angles.

Each mallet tells a story –some arecut and fashioned from iron-bark stumps, others are forged from steel, some are state-of-the-artcarbon fibre and titanium.

The aim is to ‘run the hoops’in succession and also to stop the opposition from doing the same.

It’s a highly competitive sport that mixes aggressive and defensive strategies.

All spectators are welcome to watch the many and varied battles.
