The school official launched its White Ribbon program yesterday.

This year Farrer, Oxley High and Manilla Central will join THS and Parry School in the program.

They will come together for the program’s annual camp in May.

Year 12 student and THS White Ribbon spokesman Tyson Waters has been in the program since Year 8.

“It’s pretty overwhelming how big it has become over the last five years,” Tyson said.

“We used to struggle to get media coverage, now everyone wants to be involved – other schools, other towns. It’s just become huge.”

Tyson said he and the other Year 12 students would be taking the message out into the community once they graduated.

He’s already determined to help out with next year’s program in any way he can.

“It’s been a big part of helping me change, to become a young man,” Tyson said.

Year 11 student Georgia Taggart is part of the school’s growing women’s White Ribbon program.

“I’ve been in the program since Year 9, so this is my second year,” Georgia said.

“The women’s program has really only just started. It shows women there are different avenues they can go to for help.

“It’s been fantastic to get girls on board with the boys, because it’s really brought us together. It’s really good to see us both working together towards the same goal.”

THS teacher and White Ribbon co-ordinator Kate McCrone said the program was gaining momentum in the community.

“When young people are passionate about something, I think that really speaks to the community. People are taken aback by how passionate these young people are and when you see passionate young people, it bodes well for a better future,” Ms McCrone said.
