Revamped Sovereigns out to make impact

NEW coach Joh Curran is under no illusions as to the magnitudeof the challenge facing Sovereigns in the Victorian Netball League championship division.

PLAYING ON: Laura McDonald will again be part of the Sovereigns’ championship division campaign in the Victorian Netball League.

In their second season, ACU Sovereigns havehad their player list overhauled after winning just the one game last year.

Only Laura McDonald has been retained for a second season.

While gelling so new many players at once is never easy, Curran is pleased with the progress the group has made in readiness forthe start of the season against Monash Uni Storm at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

And she believes the youth she has introduced has the desire and commitment to succeed.

Curran said the Sovereignshad already shown promising signs, with two wins in their four games in the pre-season competition.

She said while there was some inconsistency, Sovereigns had done enough to suggest the younger playersstepping up to the championship division for the first time would do everything possible to make the most of the opportunity they had been given.

Curran said she wanted to instill a relentless passion for success.

Shesaid having the right attitude and mental strength was crucial when it went down self belief.

Curran, who progressed from Ballarat Pride to represent Australia and play withMelbourne Vixens and West Coast Fever in the Trans-TasmanChampionship, said it was imperative Sovereigns went into eachgame with the mindset that they could win.

She said this would be her approach as coach.

Curran said it would be amazing to win first-up against her former team, where she played last season.

Curran is also encouraged by the way the division one and 19/under squads havecome together –also with an influx of newcomers.

“I can’t speak more highly about the way everyone has cometogether as a club.”.

She said the 19/under squad had plenty of talent which encouraging for the future of Ballarat’s premier netball team.
